In the Middle Ages apples were mainly cultivated in monasteries.
For many centuries the apple served as self-supply for the farmers, and was also exported to the North. The apple was considered a luxury good and supplied to various imperial courts.
The first apple cooperatives were founded at the end of the 19th century in Burggrafenamt.
The working group for integrated cultivation (AGRIOS) was established in 1988, to focus on careful cultivation and natural pest control.
In 2005 the South Tyrolean apple was awarded the European “Protected Geographical Indication” seal.
