Organic apples – better for nature and people
Organic production and tradition. The first organic apples were already being cultivated in South Tyrol in the 1980’s.
Two trends have evolved in organic production since then:
- Organic-biological production: This method is in harmony with nature and rejects the use of chemical synthetic pesticides and fertilisers.
- Bio-dynamic production: This biological cultivation method works according to the teachings of Rudolf Steiner. Each procedure is tested to see whether it fits into the integrated ecosystem and the influence of the stars is observed.
In South Tyrol, organic apple production amounts to approx. 4 per cent of the entire apple harvest. That makes South Tyrol Europe’s largest organic apple supplier! Due to its consistently environmentally friendly production methods – not only in organic cultivation – and the increasing share of organic apples, South Tyrol is a significant pioneer of apple cultivation in Europe.
