The South Tyrolean apple producers are committed to a quality that can be tasted with every bite.
The high quality of South Tyrolean apples is guaranteed to the consumers in many aspects. Eleven South Tyrolean apple varieties have been awarded the PGI (
protected geographical indication) seal. In other words: they have been recognised across the EU as regional specialities. Their quality is attributable to their geographical origin and their designation of origin is protected. The South Tyrolean Apple PGI must comply with specific production regulations and a strict set of controls, since the PGI seal guarantees the originality and well-established manufacturing process of such geographically protected products.
The EU PGI seal of approval for the South Tyrolean apple guarantees the following:
- proven connection between origin, quality and tradition of the product
- that the creation, processing and manufacture of the South Tyrolean Apple PGI takes place in South Tyrol
- that cultivation of the South Tyrolean Apple PGI takes place in accordance with the principles of integrated production or organic-cultivation
- that the defined high quality standards are met
- sponsorship through South Tyrol’s apple consortium
- that compliance with the regulations is checked by an independent board.
96 percent of South Tyrolean fruit producers implement “
integrated cultivation” which is continuously controlled by the working group (AGRIOS) [link]. The South Tyrolean organic apple is manufactured in strict compliance with the organic cultivation regulations.
