Several years ago, the Thuile family made up their minds for a life as apple farmers. Today, the Sandwiesnhof farm is the first Climate House farm in Italy.
Sandwiesnhof farm stands out immediately. In the middle of the apple orchards rises a bizarrely shaped green roof. This roof stands for a new beginning. Magdalena and Peter Thuile decided together with their daughters to start again and return to their farming roots.
In 2009, the family knowingly hazarded the consequences when they started building their house and their new life as apple farmers. Praise has never been lacking. Today, Sandwiesnhof farm is the first Climate House farm in Italy: a distinction based on the three pillars of nature, life and transparency. The Thuile family produces the necessary electricity through photovoltaics and uses a heat pump for warm water and underfloor heating. Tours of the farm and contact with the guests in the adjacent holiday apartments are meant to raise awareness for the topic. The family asks guests to use the resources conservatively during their stay and the guests profit from the pleasant side of the family philosophy: an apple bin serves as a raised lettuce and herb garden for each apartment. A supply of homemade products is availbale as well, a sort of “farm minibar”.
Lots of time and effort, but also plenty of passion were the investments in the Thuile family’s new beginning. Now they can lean back and enjoy the results.
