His son wanted to become a farmer at the age of five; Ernst Hofer didn‘t discover his passion until he had to take the running of his parents’ farm into his own hands. Larcherhof farm in Lana has been in the family for over 180 years now.
Ernst Hofer from Larcherhof farm in Lana calls himself a “fanatical farmer”. What characterizes someone like him? “You have to have grit and you have to enjoy your work,” he explains. A good farmer must check his apples once a day, walk through the orchards with his eyes open and recognize when something is wrong somewhere.
Together with his son Martin, Ernst Hofer cares for 6 hectares of apple orchards, leasing another 2.5. Since 2000, guests spend their vacation in the renovated old farmhouse. Except for farm tours or hikes, which Ernst Hofer likes to do personally, his wife looks after the guests and holiday apartments.
Hofer has now become a full-time farmer and enjoys the fact that nobody can tell him what to do: “You are your own boss and that is the best thing,” he explains. A farmer makes his own decisions, but also holds the entire responsibility for them. Hard work and the ability to do the right thing at the right moment are therefore important qualities. “A hard worker gets his reward even in bad years, while there’s something left only in the good years for someone who is lazy,” he emphasizes.
